What started out as a way to build a finance business and make some money,
is turning into an opportunity to have a global business of mind boggling
proportions because there are so many ways that my pilot friends can benefit,
I believe, the financial reality is, that the non-flying portions of this overall
business will produce the big money for both of us if there is any.. The ferry
flying, will produce a smaller proportion of the net income.
Yet, in many respects, this opportunity to ferry aircraft on international flights
is greater than the financial opportunity for someone wanting a career in aviation.
So, think of the flyer posting as a way to earn some profit for the bonus privilege
of getting to work long hours for low wages in dangerous conditions to advance
your long term goal of a career in aviation.
I expect the flyer posting, financing and deal making will generate the real
profits and the ferry business will be a break even situation if we are lucky.
I don't plan it that way, and I don't want you to plan it that way, but I expect
that is what will happen, so I don't want to mislead you.
Still, when you are ferry flying, someone is paying for the flying, paying
the travel expenses, hotels, motels, food, etc. and you are getting the experience
that you might have to pay $50 to $100 per hour to get, or might not be
able to buy at any price. And there is some spending money thrown in to
call "profit" so you can enjoy yourself and pick up some souveniers.
I would like for you to consider this an opportunity to have some fun flying,
make some money if you can, and most of all, use it as a stepping stone to
enhance your flying career and to move your flying career forward.
Because you were willing to do a simple task of posting some flyers on
bulletin boards for me, to earn some flying money, you have shown me that
you are trying to advance your aviation career. I would like to help you.
Yesterday, 2-6-2000 I was talking about pilot qualifications to a friend
of mine, Lionel Metz, and what he would think of a pilot who had flown an
international flight like one of these I have posted, when he was making
hiring decisions for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as Chief Pilot before he
retired..
Lionel said it would be an impressive accomplishment and he would give
some considerable weight to hiring a pilot like that, when the decisions were
made, other things being equal.
Lionel is in a good position to know. He flew 747's before he retired.
He was Chief Pilot for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Far East Operations,
and head of the Pilots Union. (He also was in the Battle of Britain and is
in a few history books......has a lot of grey hair and more than I do,
so I listen carefully to the words of wisdom from this Ancient Owl.).
One of my first flying jobs was ferrying aircraft. The first flight was to
Curacao (an island off the Coast of Venezuela). I didn't even know where it
was when I got the opportunity to take the trip. I just said I would go. Then
I asked where it was.
On that flight, I got to see some beautiful places, got to fly over 400 miles of
open ocean at night navigating with an ADF, got to make several international
flights through different countries and I got to learn some very important flying
lessons that enabled many things that happened later on.
On the trip I flew through four countries, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos
Islands, The Dominican Republic an Curacao, all on one trip.
The next trip went through Mexico, flying a Callair, to Nicaragua, for Silvio
Cardinale, the Vice President of Nicaragua.
I had freedom, responsibility and a little spending money. I did interesting
things. I met interesting people. Coming back through customs at Miami
with a machete hanging out of my briefcase, I got a few strange looks, but
all in all, it was incredible fun. This was before the days of drug running
pilots and the suspicion it conveyed on pilots.
When the summer was through, my logbook showed 400 hours, flying over
long stretches of open water, jungle, and some really difficult conditions I could
tell tall tales about as well as a number of long trips in the United States to
places I had never been..
The two trips I flew to Nicaragua were navigated with map and compass only.
Running lights, no cockpit lights and no landing lights, no radios. And they
shut the lights off at the Managua International Airport in Nicaragua so I had
to land in the dark and learn first hand why ferry pilots tell you to land before
dark. After that, I knew I could navigate an airplane anywere. No one had even
heard of GPS then.
I had filed international flight plans and had gone through customs
in 6 countries and handled the exporting of three airplanes.
Bob Grant paid to feed me, gave me airplane(s), a handfull of money and
said have fun. Wow.....
That 400 hours, at the end of the summer after all expenses were paid,
it only cost me $10.00.
I am not sure who got the better end of that deal, but, in retrospect,
I think, that I did.
Bob Grant, who I was working for made a few bucks off me, I hope,
but sitting in an office, watching someone fly off with an airplane
you would rather be flying yourself, doesn't start to compare to what
I had experienced using someone elses money.
At the time, I did not fully realize what an opportunity that had been or
how it would eventually change my life.
Now I understand a lot of things better and in part, this is what makes
the opportunity I am going to describe here, so exciting for me, and I
hope for you as well.
Because what I learned can help me to help you to meet your career
objectives and, hopefully, in the process, return favors done for me, by many
people in 46 countries around the world and all 50 states, who have helped
me along the way, in large and small ways, and many of whom did it to help
me for little or nothing in return.
Hopefully, I can help you cut years off what can be a long and painful journey.
One of the lessons I learned on that trip, was that although flying was definitely
the best job in the world, it didn't pay all that well. So I turned to deal making and different ways to earn finders fees.
I learned the right information at the right time can be worth a lot of money.
In part, that is what the flyer business is about, selling information.
Aviation is a game of personal contacts and people helping people. Without
those contacts it is really difficult to make much progress. To get ahead, you
need a lot of education and training, that takes lots of time and money to get,
but then oftentimes, it still doesn't do much good. You cannot afford to waste
an opportunity.
Right now, we are experiencing a boom in aviation hiring. What used to
be a 10-20-30 year wait to get a chance at an airline cockpit, is now
possibly a matter of just getting some flying time, experience, AND THE
RIGHT CONNECTIONS.
AND THIS IS WHAT THIS FLYER POSTING DEAL IS CREATING.
It is an opportunity for me to make lots of contacts and fill lots of different needs,
some of which have to be done for free, or little profit, and some of which can be
done for money to pay bills, or should lightning strike, maybe make a lot of money..
It is just a matter of sorting these opportunities into categories, classifying the information, and figuring out where a profit can be made. i.e. who needs what.
If we work together, and help one another climb the ladder, we can all make
some money from the flyer business to pay for some flying and fun, ratings, etc.
(hey....it takes a long time to make what a 747 Captain makes and we have to eat
in the meantime). BUT, there is much more than meets the eye here.
Each of you, as you climb the ladder, will leave a job opening, which IF you
can tell me about in a timely manner, someone else in this happy group can fill.
Even if your boss sells the airplane and you need to find another job, and don't
want to relocate, the next owner may need a pilot, someone to train the next pilot,
someone to sell his old airplane, someone who knows where a bigger airplane
is that your boss wants to buy now to replace the one he sold that you were flying.
There is more money in finders fees from this re-shuffling of who is flying what
airplane, than there is in a year of flying wages........IF someone who knows how
to make use of it KNOWS ABOUT IT IN A TIMELY MANNER.
Right now I have pilots of all stages in the career cycle helping. Private Pilots
working on Commercial. Commercial working on CFI. Instructors training
new Privates who will buy an airplane. Pilots moving from corporate jobs to the
airlines. Airline Captains who are retiring and leaving a left seat to be filled (and needing someone else to move into the right seat). I even have some retired ones running the airline simulators and training their replacement Captains.
And THIS FLYER DEAL , aircraft ferrying deal, aircraft financing deal, aircraft sales
deal, IS A PIPELINE into these opportunities BEFORE they become public
and get on the street.
And, with pilot eyes all over the world, who are aware of needs to buy new
airplanes, needs to sell old airplanes, needs for flight instructors, needs
for commercial pilots, needs to hire pilot replacements, needs to buy,
finance and equip airplanes, even airlines, WE CAN ALL GET AHEAD IF
WE SHARE THIS INFORMATION.
My little ferry business here, and the flyer posting business, is just
one more thing I can contribute to the overall effort. Not only
to make us both some money, but to advance your career in a way
that is really difficult to apreciate.
If you can get some experience on one of these ferry flights, it is a lot
better to have someone paying for your flying time than paying for it
yoruself.
Even if you just bid on one and don't get the flight you will have some
valuable experience planning an international flight, considering
survival options,....the whole ball of wax. Experience that is sometimes
next to impossible to get under any conditions, much less get paid for.
When you know of someone who wants to buy an airplane, or sell one,
a commisison may be generated. And the airplane may need an instructor
or a pilot to fly it so a job opportunity will be created.
And that airplane may need to be financed (another finders fee opportunity)
And the airplane may need someone to pick it up and fly it somewhere
(for pay hopefully, but even if you did it for free and an airline ticket
home, it is better than paying for the flying......isn't it? (Think of your
logbook as a form of savings account.)
So, if you tell a local aircraft broker, or FBO about my ferry business, it
can create an opportunity for someone in the group to get an opportunity
to gain some valuable flight experience, if you don't want the trip.
And if I can make some money of the deal, I can pay you a finder's fee.
Again, we all benefit. Somone gets some experience.
You see, even though it is difficult to make a living flying on pay by the
hour, or on salary, because there are not enough hours in the day, the
boss is stingy, and all the other reasons that makes it hard for someone
to advance in the aviation game, for financial reasons, you can still make
money, from aviation if you NEVER WASTE AN OPPORTUNITY and you
know how to go about it.
So, I will end this dissertation to say that I want to help.
Please help me to help you.
If you have questions OR COMMENTS PLEASE email me. I want to hear them.

I expect you to act as the Captain of an aircraft carrying the flag of the United States of America. You are PILOT IN COMMAND whether it is a Cessna 150 or a 747. The safety of the flight is , first, last, and always, in your hands and your total responsibility.
I expect any aircraft entrusted to you to be operated within the operating
limitations, at safe altitudes, and in a lawful mannerat all times.
I expect that if you are ill, have a cold, or anything that could hinder
your ability to conduct a safe flight that you will cancel the trip until
you are feeling well.
I expect that you will be well rested before each leg of the flight.
International flights over water are long, long days. An instrument
approach, at night, in poor visibility or other adverse conditions
requires as much in your favor as you can get. This is no time to
need another hour of sleep.
I expect that you will exercise the best judgment you can muster in every
circumstance and to err on the side of safety if there is any question whatsoever
in your mind. International ferry flying can be dangerous and a mistake can be
fatal. Maintenance to the aircraft can be expensive, time consuming, of uncertain quality and hard to come by. You are on your own and can be a long way from help
if a part breaks. DO NOT TAKE CHANCES.
Be extremely conservative with fuel reserves. On long flights to remote places
you may have to fly 500 miles or more to get to an alternate due to weather.
CALL and CONFIRM AVGAS IS AVAILABLE. Waiting a couple of months
for more fuel or having it flown in by jet can really eat up your profit.
I expect that you will not use drugs of any sort and will not carry them aboard the aircraft for any reason.
DEATH SENTENCES for drug possessionare a reality in many foreign countries that you may travel through. You DO NOT HAVE THE LEGAL PROTECTION
you have in the United States. If you do something to get in a foreign jail, you might not get out alive. TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. DON'T DO ANYTHING TO CAUSE TROUBLE.
If someone approaches you and asks you to carry them with you or offers to pay you to do something suspicious or illegal, RUN, DON'T WALK, to the nearest police station.
I expect you to act as the Captain of an aircraft carrying the flag of the United States of America. You are PILOT IN COMMAND whether it is a Cessna 150 or a 747.
The safety of the flight is first, last, and always, in your hands and your total responsibility.
I expect you, first and foremost and above all else, to be on the utmost good behavior because it reflects on my business and your conduct reflects on the United States of America when you are a guest in a foreign country. It also may impact your ability to return safely without incident.
I expect you will consider yourself and conduct yourself as you would if you were an Ambassador of the United States in any and every foreign country.
Your experience as Captain of an international flight will go on your resume and may someday qualify you for a position of greater importance such as a position as a diplomat, because of your international experience. This is an awesome responsibility so start learning how to act like one now.
I expect you to be pleasant, courteous, helpful and kind to any and all foreign nationals you may meet or be in the custody of. They are only doing their job, whatever it may be. If you are friendly, polite and courteous, they will react likewise. If you are
rude, obnoxious, contentious, hateful, you will find people can make your life miserable.
If you are rude, arrogant or use abusive language, you may quickly end up looking down a gun barrel, land in jail, or have other adventures to tell your grandchildren about.
Language barriers can cause communication frustrations which can blow little things way out of proportion. A Berlitz tape course before you go, and a few useful words can go a long way toward making lifelong friends in a strange country. Learn to be
humble and people will go out of their way to help you.
At least LEARN HOW to GREET SOMEONE, i.e. HELLO, THANK YOU, GOODBY and ask for FOOD, WATER, and DIRECTIONS to the next place you need to go.
I expect that you will not use alcohol during any portion of the time
the aircraft is in your possession nor will you use alcohol or in the presence of a client. NO EXCEPTIONS. If a social situation demands, drink orange juice, water, or something non alcoholic.
When you are on a trip your safety and the safety of the aircraft totally depends on your being well, alert, and having all your senses working at 100%. Anything less can cause a fatal accident. One infraction of this will make you ineligible to bid future flights. Do not even think about it.
I expect you to exercise discretion when dealing with clients and to be appropriately dressed at all times according to the DRESS CODE when in the presence of clients, going through customs and dealingwith foreign officials at every level...
International flying is not like flying in the US. It can be dangerously unpredictable at times. (like cutting the runway lights off to save electricity while I was trying to land at night at Managua International Airport.) Central, South American and Asian Countries are particularly susceptible to this hazzard. Language problems make
it worse.
I expect you to plan to land two hoursbefore sunset on all phases of international flight, even if it means taking off hours beforedaylight. It is better to be able to fly into daylight and land in daylight if you are low\ on fuel or have a problem than trying to
make a deadstick landing, in the dark, without lights or fuel.
I expect you to read the INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT INFORMATION
MANUAL for the airport of landing and the alternate beforeevery flight.
Differrent countries deal with perceived threats in "different" ways.
Haiti for instance used to put barrels on the runway after dark. In countries where there is civil unrest, war, or other political instability, be particularly careful what you do and say. People can be made uncomfortable by pilots whom they do not know.
I expect that you will not use drugs of any sort and will not carry them aboard the aircraft for any reason.

If someone approaches you and asks you to carry them with you or offers to pay you

I expect you to be dressed in a suit with coat and tie when meeting the client, unless he meets you when you land and you are in your flying clothes.. If you have time to get dressed before you meet the client to deliver the airplane to him, I expect you to wear a suit, with coat and tie and a white shirt.
Foreign clients who purchase aircraft are atypical, generally wealthy well educated, business people of accomplishment. They react to proper attire.
If you are at an intermediate stop and are not meeting with foreign officials
then normal flight clothing is ok. In Spanish areas of Central and South
America as well as Spain and Portugal a flight shirt with epaulets and
Captains bars will keep you in good stead as well as going through customs.. This is also OK throughout the US, Canada, Greenland, Iceland and Asia at airports.
If you do not know what appropriate business attire is, get a copy of
"DRESS FOR SUCCESS" by John Molloy. There is a version for
males and for females. It is one of the most important books you can
read if you want to deal with business people, realtors, lawyers, doctors,
on financial dealings with or for me.
It is an important part of your overall education, probably more important
than most college courses you might take and something that no one will
ever explain to you, except John Molloy who has done an excellent job.
You can find it at any bookstore or Barnes and Noble

If you expect to advance in high level business circles dealing with accomplished people, such as entrepreneurs, realtors, lawyers, and other professional people, it is essential for you to dress appropriately.
Mr. Molloy has defined the acceptable norms for business dress and
documents the psychology of how and why people react to certain
types of clothing as they do. It is both fascinating and frightening, but
if you want to get the opportunity to succeed, you need to know the
proper uniform of the day so you at least get through the door to the
opportunity so you have a chance to exhibit your other superior skills.
Proper attire will make this difference for you by utilizing the unconscious
Pavlovian conditioning our society has done.
In many cases this is more important than your professional qualifications
in getting a job or making a sale, and it is even more important in foreign countries than it is in the United States.
Who you are is, in large part, conveyed by the way you dress. Armies hav uniforms to convey information instantly about rank and authority. So do police. So do Airlines. The dress code has governed societies for centuries.
Business operates on the same principal, but with slightly less well defined rules, but THE RULES ARE THERE, whether you know them or not.
If you are unaware of these rules, and you do not obey them, you hinder your opportunities for advancement without understanding why......and no one else will probably ever tell you. This is your notice.
If you do not have a good suit, you need one and should get one right away. If you are going through London or Hong Kong get one (or two) tailor made when you are there.
Hong Kong suits are the best clothing value in the world. If you are in the area, it is worth routing your trip for a layover there. Not only do you get the best tailoring in the world, but you get the best prices, best selectionof fabrics, and can get it all finished in 24 hours.
You may be able to schedule your flight through Hong Kong at no extra cost to either pickup the airplane or , after delivery, on the way home.
If you are going to work the finance business, person to person, with realtors, accountants, attorneys, clients, a dark blue suit with narrow pinstripe (3/8 inch) is the uniform of the day. A white shirt, button down or with collar stays, and a subdued necktie. Diagonal stripes.
The other "working uniform" is a gray wool suit. White monogrammed shirtsand a subdued tie. Diagonal stripes.
If you want to make a good first impression and command the respect of strangers,
people in authority, and most of all, clients of mine, dress appropriately. It will
make your life easier and more profitable.
I expect that you will not use alcohol during any portion of the time the aircraft is in your possession nor will you use alcohol in the presence of a client. NO EXCEPTIONS.
If a social situation demands, drink orange juice, a pine float, water, coffee or something else non alcoholic. If the client asks, tell him/her that you don't
drink because you are a pilot and have a lot of responsibility. He/she will
respect you for it.
When you are on a trip your safety and the safety of the aircraft totally depends on your being well, alert, and having all your senses working at 100%. Anything less can cause a fatal accident.
When you are PILOT IN COMMAND of an international flight. I expect you to act like it. Do not get involved in an international incident.
Some foreign countries, prohibit alcohol and you can land in jail if you even have it in your possession, much less use it.
A record of alcohol problems will ruin your aviation career. I am trying to help you so, if you need a drink, break the habit. Otherwise you are wasting your time and money
and will ruin your career aspirations.
One infraction of this will make you ineligible to bid future flights.
Do not even think about it.

the same flights using this travel planner, then I used Jane Dorrier and GLOBE
TRAVEL, HERE IN CHARLOTTESVILLE. Jane was at least 10%
better.
9. Roadmaps for the cities you visit______________________Click Here. Roadmaps. Get your roadmaps for the cities you visit here. Be able to
find your way around before you get there. Don't waste your time trying to
figure out where you are going. Be prepared, Know in advance where your
motel is.
10. After you have gotten good bids from the internet travel planner
send an email to JANE DORRIER at GLOBE TRAVEL and see if she
can do any better. JANE says that GLOBE HAS THE BEST RATES
and can give you personal service that the comptuer and airlines cannot
which can be very important when you are a long way from nowhere.
My experience says she has been at least 10% below the best I can
do on my own with other travel agents.
11. Check your gas prices carefully. I call ahead to the FBO and ask what
the prices are whcn I prepare a bid. This includes long distance calls
to foreign countries. It prevents nasty surprises like in Greenland where
avgas is over $8.00/gallon. One subscription service I use is
http://www.fillupflyer.com They check 3500 FBO's on a weekly basis
and you can spot substantial price differences on the same airport.
Fuel prices can make the difference between profit and loss on a
long trip.
12. AOPA The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is a place you
can get up to date charts, flight information, help with international
overflight permits, flight planning kits, etc.
13. IAOPA The International Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association website is a place you can find contacts in each country, email addresses, etc. These people
can advise you about local flight conditions, maybe find a place to put you
up.
14. Crewmembers.com. Crashpads....Fellow pilots who have a place you can
stay with a little notice. This is a way to conserve some cash.
15. For The Bid Contract to Submit - It's in the Bid Package _________ Click Here
Each flight is different. Times change as does your experience and your ratings.
Each flight is by WRITTEN CONTRACT ONLY. I have to have written agreements
to provent mis-understandings and I have to have the details on the pilot that
are in the bid package. If you are serious about bidding on these flights then
please FILL OUT THE PAPERWORK so I can make a decision based on

18. To Order your International FlightInformation Manual A MUST Click Here
The INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT INFORMATION MANUAL is an official
governmental publication regarding all international airports worldwide. Here you

to prevent nasty surprises. (like barrels on the runway for night landings in Haiti).
19. Airline, Hotel Prices and Schedules TO Make Reservations Click Here
I have a special deal with Jane Dorrier, owner of Globe Travel. She gives good
rates. I have tried to find better ones but she beats me every time. Still, I
DO MY HOMEWORK FIRST using the computer at TRIPS.COM so I don't waste her time. This picks the best and most economical routing and the EXTRA SAVINGS comes out of her very slim profit.
Last, a real live human travel agent is essential when you get in a jam in a far away place. By throwing her this business I get the best of the best. Best prices, best service, and a real live human being with a staff of professionals who I can call in an emergency in some far away place who can get me a motel reservation or a
airline ticket I can pick up at the airport wherever I am..
I recommend you use her services to keep your bid competitive and your personal
travel nees as well.

These are the rules. They are for your safety, to help you have a profitable trip,
and to build the business so there will be other trips.
20a. Dress Code_________________________ Click Here
I subscribe to John Malloy's Dress Code because IT WORKS. I would rather
work in my flight jacket and scruffy clothes, but when business demands I put up
with it because it elicits positive conditioned responses from people I don't know
and who I depend on for a living. I expect you to understand what it is and why.
Whether you like it or not is not my problem.

Let me hear from you. Good Luck
I will give consideration to your request and try to give everyone who is posting
flyers for me an opportunity to fly trips they are qualified for whenever possible.
All flights are subject to cancellation and final confirmation by the client.
The selection citeria will be:
1. The opportunity to bid and fly these trips is a bonus for doing a good job
generating other paying business.
Where you stand on the loan production chart i.e. the person producing the
most calls from flyers posted will have preference for the trip, other things,
in my sole judgment, being equal. Referrals of other types of business also
count. Faxing in the posting logs so I can see what you are doing counts.
If you are generating business or I can see you are trying to generate business
you have a preference to take these trips ahead of anyone else.
I know that if you post enough flyers and hand out business cards, the business
will follow.
2. Your Qualifications, experience and ratings. I will not send you on a trip
that I do not believe you are qualified for.
By the same token, I can drum up ferry trips of all types of ferry flights
through my contacts. There will be multiple opportunities for flights of
varying difficulty.
So if you are not up for a inter-galactic flight yet, you can try out on the
domestic flights in the US, the Caribbean, Central/South America, North Atlantic
South Pacific, Japan, etc as your abilities qualify you.
3. The references you give and the manner they indicate you will comport
yourself as a guest in a foreign country, under business like settings
with clients who are important to this company for referrals and
repeat business.
I want people who can represent my company and have people think favorably
about us so they will send future business. Repeat business and refererrals
are what build long term profits.
4. Last, your bid price does count. I am bidding these trips against other companies
in the global aircraft delivery business. They are experts. Our prices have
to give reliable competent service at competitive prices. The competition
forms the upper limit.
1. Download the trip worksheets from the Trips to Bid. Use them to figure
your costs.
2. Figure your route using the Global Flight Planning Room to make a rough bid
Verify every detail independently from official publications before making
the flight. This tool is to get you started, not to finish the job.
3. You can get charts and official international flight publications from the
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
4. Email your bid to me at ferrypilot@crosswinds.net
Fax your completed bid form and contract to 435-302-9021.
